A Message from Superintendent Gamberg

A Message from Superintendent Gamberg
Good Morning,

I hope this message to staff and community continues to find each of you, your family, and your friends doing well during this very difficult time in our history, and our lives.

The Southold learning community has stepped up in so many ways for one another.  It is a reminder of the power of the goodness in people, and for me it is also a reminder of the power of our words.

I have been touched, both personally and professionally, by the things that have been written to me, shared with me, and shared among our students, staff, and families.

Yes, the incredible service of our neighbors who are helping and supporting those in need is the first, and most important reminder of what really matters during this time of crisis.  As a school district we also see the audacious impact that technology is having in terms of the delivery of instruction.  But for me, I am struck by how the power of words, the simple yet impactful choice that we all have to use words to affect any given situation, is also profoundly important.

A staff member made a simple suggestion via email and it motivated me to remember to take care of myself.  I have been inspired by the kind and thoughtful expressions of support offered by elementary children to firefighters and healthcare workers, and the offers of help that you have made to one another.  A decision to say or write something in ways that can have a positive impact on another human being, or in almost any given situation is a freedom that can change lives.

We must continue to do our part to keep some semblance of normalcy for the students we serve... and for each other.

We must do our part alongside our neighbors, both near and far to fight this virus with all that we can muster.

At the end of the day, this is a test, unlike any other we have seen in our school house...not just of our educational and health care systems, or the economy, but also of our humanity.  Let's be there for each other, not just now, but always.

Respectfully and with gratitude,

David Gamberg
